Getting your wisdom teeth out is something you will have to consider at some point in your life. It’s important to be informed about the timing of when to get them removed, if you’ve determined they need to be removed. It’s important to remember that everyone is different, and while one age for your wisdom teeth removal is right for you, it may not be right for someone else.
Wisdom teeth are also called third molars. They usually make their first appearance in young adults between the ages of 17 and 21. Initial evaluation of wisdom teeth should be performed between the ages of 16 and 19. Often mouths are too small for these four additional molars, and an extraction is necessary.
It’s not uncommon for impacted wisdom teeth to become symptomatic when people are in their thirties, forties or even fifties. There is no age limit, but as you get older, the surgery is more difficulty, recovery is more difficult and the risk of complications is higher. If your dentist recommends surgery, don’t wait. Waiting can cause other problems and the necessity to lose other teeth.
While the age that you might need your wisdom teeth removed varies, the reason for their removal is pretty standard. When you feel pain, have infections, cysts, tumors, damage to nearby teeth, gum disease, and extensive tooth decay occur, it’s most likely time for your wisdom teeth to come out.
Remember to involve your dentist in the decision making process about when is the right time for you to have your wisdom teeth removed. At Mansouri Family Dentistry, we care about your dental health and want to help you make your decisions concerning your wisdom teeth, and all of your dental needs.
